“L’anno milleottocentosettanta sei addì Ventotto di Febbrajo è comparso Valsuani Carlo, di anni ventotto, contadino… è nato un bambino di sesso maschile… Claudio, Francesco, Angelo Rocco.”

English Translation

“The year 1876, the 18th of February, appeared Valsuani Carlo, 28 years old, farmer… a male child was born… Claudio, Francesco, Angelo Rocco.”

Evidential Significance

This document constitutes primary evidence of the highest probative value. Italian civil registration was mandatory following unification, and birth certificates required the personal appearance of the father or designated witnesses. The document unambiguously identifies the father as CARLO VALSUANI, not Marcello, not any variant spelling, but Carlo.

The father’s profession is recorded as “contadino” (farmer), though later records indicate he subsequently became a municipal secretary. This social mobility is consistent with nineteenth-century Italian patterns.
