Oral Story Transcriptions: Creation Narrative Structure

Oral tradition transcriptions collected during the mid-20th century document specific creation narratives that establish the hornbill’s primordial role. These stories, taught during Poro initiation’s advanced stages, explain how the bird’s characteristics became templates for human society.

Narrative Pattern:

1. Beginning: Before humans, before agriculture, before the social order, the gods created the hornbill.

2. Action: The hornbill probed the earth with its long beak, creating the first plantings. It called out before rains, establishing the pattern of seasonal cycles.

3. Consequence: These actions became the template, when humans emerged, they learned agriculture by observing the hornbill’s earth-probing, learned seasonal timing by hearing its calls, learned procreation by witnessing its “pregnant” form.

4. Continuation: Through carved representations and ceremonial invocation, Senufo communities maintain connection to this original creative power.

These narratives are not told as children’s stories but preserved as sacred knowledge within Poro society. Only those completing multiple initiation stages gain access to the full creation narrative, ensuring knowledge transmission remains controlled and respected.
