The Hornbill in Senufo Creation Mythology

Among the Senufo people of West Africa, the hornbill occupies a singular position in creation narratives. Unlike many African cosmologies where humans or deities appear first, Senufo tradition identifies the hornbill called “Sejen” or “Porpianong” as the inaugural creation the first being to exist when the gods shaped the world.

The First Living Being

This primacy carries profound implications. The hornbill’s existence precedes human society, agriculture, even the sun and moon in some versions of the myth. As Susan Elizabeth Gagliardi of the Metropolitan Museum of Art notes in her research on Senufo poro initiation, “the hornbill represents the first living being created by the gods, embodying fertility, procreation, and wisdom.”

What did this first creature do? According to oral traditions preserved by Poro elders, the hornbill established the fundamental patterns that would govern existence:

• Fertility Cycles: The bird’s behavior probing the earth with its long beak became the template for agricultural planting. Its “pregnant” form, with beak touching swollen belly, demonstrated how male and female principles must unite to create life.

• Wisdom Transmission: The hornbill’s distinctive call, heard before rains, taught the pattern of listening for natural signs. This became the foundation for divination practices still used by Sandogo society members to determine farming schedules.

• Community Structure: The bird’s social behavior living in pairs while maintaining larger flock connections modeled the balance between family units and community cohesion that structures Senufo villages.

Ritual Significance

This mythological primacy explains why hornbill sculptures appear at crucial moments in Senufo ritual life. During Poro initiation ceremonies that span 21 years across three seven-year stages, the hornbill image guides initiates through symbolic death and rebirth mirroring the primordial creation itself.

The sculpture is not merely representation but re-presentation making present again the creative power that first brought existence into being. When elders place a hornbill carving in agricultural fields or carry it in fertility dances, they invoke the original creative act, asking the gods to renew the world’s generative power.
